Oooh ... an interesting question, H, that had me trawling through various internet sites.
Basically, most of the information i could find mentions the bold, provocative pose, the low-cut dress.
Then i found an article that said " Sargent had painted one strap of Gautreau's dress dangling from her shoulder, suggesting, to outraged Parisian viewers, either the prelude or the aftermath of sex."

Everything about it seems too sharp and pointy to be beautiful to me.
I like it. The heavy folds of the black dress, the stron looking alabaster woman, But why was it scandelous?

Hmmmm, looking at http://www.abcgallery.com/S/sargent/sargent.html
I discover that I like him much more than I thought I did, primarily as I like his earlier work and it is his later, vaguer, peices that are perhaps more famous. I love Fumée d'Ambre Gris, Dr. Pozzi at Home, and The Misses Vickers.
Rian thinks her beauty is in her dismissive attitude.
Or, perhaps tis indifference.
