One of the new flatmates is a former meth addict. He's done time for it, but he's clean now. He still struggles, I think, but it is possible to stay away from it, with a will.

I know people who have come back from meth addiction. One of them is just a shell now, but the others are doing ok as far as I know. There's always a way if they are prepared.
One of my college dorm-mates had been a speed addict in highschool, and had been hospitalized and in a treatment center for a year. Then she got it together, finished highschool, went to the University of Chicago, was actually more together and mature than most of the rest of us, earned her degree, got married, and as far as I know lived happily ever after. In fact I just googled her and found her. She is the assistant director at a University Counseling Center in my general area of the country. She went on to earn a couple of advanced degrees after her bachelors
Another I knew, slid down and down, then died.
