Christmas Pleasures

Rian&Friends have adopted a 'needy family' for Christmas. Tis a single mom with two little girls.

The mother submitted a list of the things they would like, yes? Mostly it is necessities. Clothes, shoes, towels. McDonald's Money 'for a treat'.

Rian has purchased a nice set of towels. And I will pick up the McDonald's Money. Shoes and most clothes have been taken care of.

There is little mention on the list of toys....colouring books and crayons, it says. As their apartment is too small for bigger items.

I wish I could think of something that would bring pleasure to the the children, but also, especially, to the mother. Something sinfully delightful that she would never in a life time spend precious money on, but also something WONDERFUL. I do not know if she likes chocolate. I do not know if she has a bath. I do not know if she gets her hair cut...

Rian wishes the Perfect Idea would fall from the sky and hit me on the head.

What about a membership to the local zoo? Then they could go as often as they wanted.

Or maybe it's too far away... *squints* Does Spokaloo have a zoo?

Hmm.

I like Emma's idea!

or perhaps some movie ticket coupons, maybe some for adults and kids, so she could go with a friend and/or bring her daughters too?

I was talking to Mum, and she said that even something as simple as some nice soaps and face creams and perfume would be really nice. She said that Mum's sometimes go without such things if they have to look after kids. I guess she's right.

Maybe you could make up a package of chocolates and perfume and things like that for her?

A day spa pass. Can't get much more indulgent and relaxing than that.

Perhaps my own personal biases are intruding, however I don’t feel that someone living frugally would much care for soaps and perfumes that they have generally learned to live without. I really believe that a good book is far more lasting and uplifting.

A good book is certainly a fabulous thing. But, alien a concept thought it is to me, there are people who just don't read. It would be a shame if she was one of them and just didn't appreciate the wonder of a good book.

Perhaps a few pretty flowerpots and a selection of nice flower seed packets and some compost? Something beautiful that will cheer her and her small ones come springtime. And they could plant things together. You could even get one of those little sets of garden tools for children, with the brightly coloured handles.

Thank you. Those are all wonderful ideas, yes?

Rian shall have to decide by Wednesday.

I am just appreciating the way that everybody's suggestions are shaped by who they are...

I'd say anything she and the kids can enjoy together, but nothing disproportionately costly compared to the other stuff. Just something small and unusual to show you thought about it.

But - guess what - I like small and unusual things. Personal bias again. :)

Best of luck with it.

That's really a wonderful thing to do Rian.

i also like the zoo or movie tickets idea, but the soap idea is great too, i think it would do a lot for a mum, a woman, you know so she could feel pretty and feel more respect for herself. i think it's good for self estime.
I had the idea of a nice perfume too in the same vein. or perhaps a dinner in a nice restaurant if you can afford it, so she could go out and share something special with her girls, something to remember.

ahhh spelling... sorry.
