Mop
Since Rian fired the maids, Rian has had to turn a hand to floor scrubbing. Every Saturday is Floor Scrubbing Day. Rian has discovered that, whilst bad for the back, floor scrubbing is in fact good for idle thoughts.
Todays idle floor scrubbing related thought:
The most important thing about owning an old house, Rian thinks, is POSSIBILITY. Yes, one must move from one room to the next, repairing peeling linoleum or cracked tile or woodrot or chipping paint. And no doubt the Very Ugly Peeling Wallpaper in Rian's upstairs bath will stay that way for at least another 6 months (making it 4 years of peeling wall paper), but...
One lives with such imperfections, because the POSSIBILITIES are there. The possibility of change, of improvement, of Perfection. What is life without possibility?

There is also tghe joy in having made something better.
But why is your floor mopping so hard on your back? Surely you are not bending low except to get edges.
I suspect Rian is on her knees scrubbing, Cinderella-style.
I can't get to the philosophical part of the post. I have trouble getting past "Rian fired the maids." If the maids are now wandering around Spokaloo looking for work, send them my way--I have some bathrrooms and a kitchen floor that need attention.
Yup I'm picturing Rian in a cinderella rags with a huge sponge and lots of suds, on all fours.
I love the idea of renovating old houses. New shiny houses are boring.
Of course, I've never had to do the work, myself.
*grumbles* new shiny houses are all some of us can afford!
And whilst I agree that the character of a house is partly due to the building, I believe it is more down to the contents and people living there.
Emano, send those maids this way once they have finished at your place. would you?
The Maids, says Rian, wrapping rags about Self, did not do as Perfect a job as Rian.
Today is Upstairs Cleaning. And perhaps Gardening in the Rain.
How I adore green spring.
The Maids...did not do as Perfect a job as Rian.
Then perhaps Rian needs to take care of my bathrooms and kitchen floor. Then you can go to indy's.
Rian can come to chezbob and see how bob cleans. It involves watching tv for a few hours tutting to oneself that the place looks like a mess. Then emailing skit to say how messy it is (often leading to a conversation about how long it has been since skit did any washing up). Then, as that exhausts me, some more tv. And then as the sun goes down the mess cannot be seen so perfectly. And bob watches more tv.
Yes, Rian can join me for this whenever she likes.
I live with an obsessive compulsive cleaner. My room not being very tidy 'distresses' him.
Sigh.
Ash just tells me to get out of the way.
But I do the dishes all the time. Does that count?
When I was a lass, my mother would move the kitchen table and chairs into the next room and scrub the kitchen floor with Brillo pads. It would take her hours. I remember dong it for her a few times in the summer; I always hated to see anyone walk on it after that.
*laughs at Kepp*
I washed up tonight. *feels all proud* But on the other hand I did not pack. I kind of re-read chunks of FF...
I also cannot get past the maid-firing, I'm afraid. Just...maids. And plural. Oddness.
Mary-Rose has a maid and she keeps urging me to get one also. I fear that she is worried about the state of chezbob, worried that she will never be able to get a tennant after I leave my unique mark on the place.
Having maids is quite usual it seems... but Rian, forgive me if I am wrong, does not work so why did she need a maid?
Rian hired maids when Rian was...under doctor's orders not to clean.
And Rian managed to keep the maids on for a few years after...wicked Rian...
Then Rian decided 85 dollars an hour was a horrible indulgence and decided to play Cinderella.
And, as Rian said, I am better at it.
Now I feel guilty for not putting that laundry away... and all the dishes on the bench.
Having a maid here is not so uncommon too. But most of the time it's bachelors or couples that work in big companies who hire them.
But... 85 dollars per hour ???!! you must be kidding.
I can be your maid whenever you want Rian. Even if you fire me on my first day, it'll be all profits for me. *grins*
My stepmother is doing that kind of job from time to time. Right now she's working for a familly who work for the Swiss TV but i'm pretty sure she's not paid so much.
